So not too long ago I went to see MEN at the Brooklyn Museum. I am down with MEN's agenda of making queer electropop anthems, of promoting politics through accessible dance music. That was what I needed in Le Tigre in high school, and without this kind of music, this blog wouldn't be here. That said, sometimes you need more confrontation.

Enter FUCKING DYKE BITCHES.

FDB provide a different kind of queer anthem. Think Blatz as a metal band, smacking you upside the face with queerness rather than starting a dance party. Although they're also that. I gave Fucking Dyke Bitches a brief shout-out after they played a show at Manifesta along with Aye Nako, Sandy and the Rats, and Invincible Prismz. It was insanely crowded but still an awesome rowdy time, one of the best shows I've been to this year. FDB did a cover of "Fuk Shit Up" too. Despite the amped up riffs, the Hand Jobs snottiness is definitely still present. Perfect combination of squeak and anger. FUCK YEAH!

Sadly I think this band are no more, at least in their current incarnation. So enjoy this demo.

Burning Kitchen

Wrapping up the supposedly month-long series of international lady-fronted hardcore is Burning Kitchen's 10", Damn You If You Do... Damn You If You Don't. Clearly I'm great at sticking to self-imposed schedules.

Burning Kitchen were a Swedish hardcore band from the mid-1990s through 2000. Think angular Euro hardcore mixed with some of your favorite early US or anarcho lady-fronted punk bands. Topics include punk, immigration, and sexism. Aside from this 10", now out of print, the band put out a three-part 7" series and supposedly now have a discography available.

Nog Watt

So I'm failing pretty hard at this whole series idea. Shit happens. There'll be another post after this before May 1. Going back in time, to an early lady-fronted hardcore band, Nog Watt released a sole 7", Fear, in 1985 and contributed to a few compilations.

In addition to the Euro hardcore instrumentation, what strikes me most with Nog Watt is Joanna's howling voice, which sometimes reminds me of early goth bands like 45 Grave. She's aggressive without conforming to stereotypical hardcore tropes. Political topics range from the contemporary to the historical to secret police and paranoia.

This post will kick off a month-long series of international, lady-fronted hardcore.

I suppose I first got into Infect when 625 put out a discography compilation, I think almost two years ago now. Had been previous into them, enjoyed reading the lyrics/song explanations in English translations when I nabbed their LP from Scot last summer. I was able to pick on some themes due to the similarity of Portuguese and Spanish, but I was certainly pleasantly surprised with a lot of the radical feminist themes-- critiques of systemic oppression, the nuclear family, relationships, and so forth.

This discography compilation is really comprehensive-- including the LP and various splits, comps, demos, etc. Thundering, fast, in-your-face all-girl hardcore, Infect were active from 1998 to 2003.

Poor Aim: Love Songs

First things first: lots and lots of news. I have been very bad about keeping this updated lately, clearly. The main reason at this point is that the structure of my life has changed drastically. I'm no longer in school and cannot update this thing at work. Aside from work, I've been keeping pretty busy, and I generally don't want to do more computer-ing once I'm home. Here's one thing I've been doing...

New York Abortion Access Fund provides assistance to low-income women seeking abortion. Hopefully you know about all the fucked up shit our government has been doing to hack away at reproductive rights lately, and hopefully you're doing something about it, whether signing a petition, donating to Planned Parenthood, getting involved with some sort of radical health collective, or something else. The Gift are an awesome band from DC featuring Turboslut front-lady Beck. Waxahatchee is Katie's current solo project (from P.S. Eliot and Bad Banana). Dear Marje are playing their second show, and they're just about the cutest band in Brooklyn. If you live here I hope you make it out!

What's been occupying my time more so, is starting a record label--it's called puzzle pieces as well. I'm frighteningly uncreative. The first release, a 7" by Four Eyes is out now. Next up is a 7" by Bad Banana. That one should be ready within the next month. I'm quite excited by this whole endeavor.

This weekend I went to two rad shows-- Friday night was Fucking Dyke Bitches (ex-Hand Jobs), and last night was the release show for the International Girl Gang Underground zine with Slingshot Dakota (who did an acoustic remix of "Until the Day I Die"), Bad Banana, Aye Nako, and a new band called American Sun. If you haven't had the opportunity to check out Aye Nako they are the no-longer-so-new rendition of Fleabag. They are probably my current favorite Brooklyn band, and you can download their demo here.

And now for a post: For the past however many years, I've had an ebbing and flowing obsession with the Blow. With her electropop songs I think it's easy to get hooked in by the catchy beats, and I certainly have. I think this is only half of Khaela's genius though. She uses pop songs, in some ways more contemporarily pop than other present indie pop bands, to cloak an intelligent critique of popular culture, in a totally queer way. While not overtly queer in physical presentation, she is pretty vocally queer at shows (telling stories about girlfriends and so forth), I think what is so sharp about her performance is in her subtle subversion of pop songs.

The Blow follows the heterosexual paradigm of pop music with songs such as "Hey Boy." She subtly exaggerates the part of the desperate-for-love, over-analytic female, queering it in the process. I've raved to many I know about how I think Khaela is truly fucking intelligent in the hopes to convert them, I could go on and on and on, but I'll cut myself short, in the hopes of getting to bed at a reasonable hour. Seriously also read her blog.

Poor Aim: Love Songs was originally released on Portland's States Rights Records in 2004 before being reissued (accompanied by remixes) by K in 2007 (after the Paper Television craze). As the K website says: "A concept record loosely unified in failings; songs about failed love, and conversely, love songs that fell short - Poor Aim explores love's yearnings, deceptions, addictions, and ultimately, its complacency." It is in this failure that Khaela's critique finds its strength.

Lazy Mary

Lazy Mary kick ass. The label (Mountain Man) says "For fans of Slant 6, the Frumpies, Bikini Kill, the Stooges and Black Sabbath," but I keep thinking of if Heavens to Betsy were a metal band but not really metal. See also other grungy girl punk bands. Lazy Mary are more subdued sometimes and straight-up shrieky at others. I think my favorite track may be the totally chilling "Shiza Minnelli."

As far as I know this is the only release from this Long Beach duo. If anyone knows of a demo or any future releases/recordings, let me know! I'm hoping this band will tour the East Coast at some point in the relatively near future, or that I'll catch them at some point while in the LA area.

First, Jessica Hopper linked to this interview recently, making me revisit an old favorite: "But speaking of lesbianism, tell me about your mom’s favorite song on the new record." Check out this interview Miranda July did with Khaela from the Blow. (From/who is the Blow? I don't know how what is proper to use.)

I keep giving this Mary a shout-out, so I think it's high time another Mary gets one. The East-Coast Mary has revived her blague Cindy Shmerman, which you should check out.

To the point, I was talking about Suture with West-Coast Mary a couple weeks back. As she said, anything with both Kathleen Hanna and Sharon Cheslow is bound to be awesome. Suture features Kathleen's signature roar, but is perhaps more similar to Viva Knievel than Bikini Kill, mixing grunge, post-punk, and general brattiness. I believe they performed at IPU's Girl Night (aka punk rock dream come true).

Suture released a 7" in 1992, a split release between Decomposition and Dischord. My favorite is the more delicate B-side "Pretty Is." They contributed these three songs ("Good Girl," "Falling," and the aforementioned "Pretty Is") to the compilation cassette A Wonderful Treat, which included another one-off Kathleen Hanna project, Wondertwins. I'm going to include all four tracks on A Wonderful Treat in this upload. The 7" is long out of print, so snag it if you can!

The Dixie Cups

In addition to sharing some genes and a love for her sassy personality, my younger sister and I share a penchant for Father of the Bride. This film introduced me to the Dixie Cups #1 hit "Chapel of Love" back in the day. While browsing youtube videos of '60s girl groups back in the spring, I discovered a new love for the Dixie Cups, this time for "I'm Gonna Get You Yet."

Those dance moves, that hair... I only wish the video were in color so that I could get the full effect of the dresses. They released their earlier music on Red Bird Records, which was also home to the Shangri-Las for some time.

I gave this band a little bit of a shout out, and now it's time for a more proper one. Neonates are a new-ish band from the LA area. They pretty much got started when Mary wrote lyrics/recorded a few songs based on some interviews for a global sexualities class. This post is long overdue, and since I finally mailed a mix to Mary yesterday that I had been meaning to send out for a few months, I figure this should make an appearance as well.

Neonates play mid-paced post-punk with plenty of no-wavey/new-wavey yelping, as if it were Max’s Kansas City in 1979, fitting in the league of girl-fronted arty punk bands coming from the West Coast these days-- think a more no-wavey Brilliant Colors, for example. The band’s variation comes from a combo of dual guitars at times and guitar-bass at others along with Mary’s perpetually changing vocal pace. Occasional backed vocals and frequently hi-hat-happy songs = toe-tapping all the time. Perhaps Mary's killer podcasts might also hint at what her band sounds like.

A bit of news to start off this post... My friend Lee who is in Titfit and The Facts We Hate is organizing a mini Brooklyn girl punk fest on Thursday, October 21. Hopefully you can make it!

Picking up where my Bad Banana post left off, I have been crazy about Sourpatch for some time now. They played at Platonic Sleepover House a couple falls ago, but I couldn't go to the show and have been kicking myself ever since!

I have been in love ever since the Sourpatch demo- a dose of delightfully fuzzy pop. Their LP, which came out late last year on Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records, took it in a slightly more art-punky direction while retaining the poppiness that hooked me to begin with, not dissimilar from some of their neighbors (Brilliant Colors for example)... perhaps most akin to a more art-punk Tiger Trap. I've always found in interesting that this band shares a drummer with the grindcore band In Disgust; I think the drums sound pretty rad on this record, coming in nicely at the end of "Never (Ever Ever) Enough" for example. I think recordings of little kids speaking kind of creep me out, so I always skip the first track, but I think "Fun" is my absolute favorite. Topics generally go along with standard indie pop themes of crushes (shocking given the title of the album) and so forth, but the lyrics never sound totally cliche or forced. "Toothache" has some pretty good dueling boy-girl vocals, which I'm always partial to. I would say this is my favorite pop full length of 2010, but I think it actually came out last year.

Bad Banana

So last Monday morning I woke up around 5:30 or 6 am for no reason. The door to my room is possessed and creaks back and forth, seemingly endlessly. After about a half hour of that, I decided the internet would be a much more productive thing to do. I'm not a fan of all this facebook crap where people invite you to be a fan of their band and what not because I like to be all allusive on the internet (obviously why I write a blog). Anyway, turns out this fateful Monday morning a great great thing happened because Katie invited me to be a fan of her and Allison's new band, Bad Banana. These tracks would be enough to get me super excited and then I glanced to the bottom left corner to see "tour with SOURPATCH east coast, USA." (More on Sourpatch to follow shortly, but hopefully you already know that they rule.)

But seriously, holy shit. For anyone who loves P.S. Eliot, especially their demo, Bad Banana is essential. Perfectly glorious fuzzy pop punk, probably a little bit more on the indie pop side. I've been listening to almost nothing else since Katie sent it to me. Each of them wrote half the songs and then recorded them, and then they were all mashed together into one demo, so you can try to guess which song is by which sister. (I'll put the answers in the comments.)

My new favorite punk show love song is "Stand Next to Me." Cutest fucking lyrics ever: "I don't know the words to this song, I want you to come sing along and put your arm around me/Stand next to me/I see you across the room and I'd like to get to know you/You seem to be in high demand but you're talking to me about your favorite bands-- Descendents & Dinosaur Jr./Maybe I should have spoken up sooner/I'm not looking for a boyfriend, but if I was I would like you to be him." That is what my crush on Bad Banana is like.

This one goes out to my darling friend Jess, who loves this 7" as much as I do. It's another 7" unearthed from the Record Hospital coffins, the first 7" of two by German indie pop band Blass. I know this record came out in 1990 on Bad Moon Records, but not much else beside that.

This is in many ways more of a single than an EP for me as I only ever really listen to "Bad Effect." I love the touch of art punk/indie rock they introduce from the beginning of the song with the bass line along with lazy jangling guitars and perfect pop lines like "because my heart still burns only for you." "Short Time" certainly has some hooks as well, but who really cares when you have a pop song as superb as "Bad Effect"? I know Jess would back me up here.

Meat Joy

Well, it has been a while. Good news is that I'm settled in my new home and have quite a few posts stocked up. Credit to Baris for the introduction to this one, and to Phoenix Hairpins for the link.

Here's the sole, hard-to-track-down LP from Houston's Meat Joy. Only 1500 were pressed by Flesh & Blood Records in 1984, each with a different cover. Totally queer, totally weird, stripped down post-punk. My favorite is the ambling pop jam "Another Pair," complete with snapping; some matter-of-fact promiscuity going on here. Meat Joy add some feminist social commentary with "Slenderella" and some criticism of hardcore with "Proud to Be Stupid," which always reminds me of a quote from a Huntington Beach punk in Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins' Dance of Days: "The geeks, the people with new wave ties… When we see someone at a gig that we don’t like, we fuck them up." I'd been curious to know how this band interacted with a lot of the queer punk bands from Texas who were similarly turned off by the whole muscle head hardcore mentality. Keeping a low profile these days but still one of the best bands in Boston, Libyans continue recording more than most other bands around. This time it's a one-sided, two-song 7" with an etched B-side. I'm not sure if they all look the same (got the record-release edition when they played at Record Hospital Fest), but as always, you can expect great packaging from Libyans. (Mostly I'm thinking of their airplane-equipped 12".)

Anyway, the "A-side" (really just the first song), "Paralyzed" is going to be on the band's upcoming Sorry State 12". Similar to their other 7"s, the A-side is really more of the single, the catchy more Dangerhouse-esque song where the B-side packs a bit of a harder touch. On "Paralyzed" Liz even sounds a touch snottier, at least at the beginning of the song. We've gotten some backing vocals before, but Dan (Libyans' drummer) counters Liz on "Keep Waiting." Normally I'm not a huge fan of bands releasing a single as an album teaser or whatever, but "Keep Waiting" is worth getting this record. In fact, one reviewer called it "the most poignant love song Panella has ever written." (Scroll down all the way on that link. You know it's really saying something if you've ever heard Corner Club.) In all seriousness though, from the bass line starting off the song to the perpetually scratchy guitar riffs, you want to listen to "Keep Waiting."

Libyans are mostly on a break for the summer, but hopefully you can catch the tail end of the Eunuch tour and their new 7" (Liz plays bass in that band) or Foreign Objects (Dan also drums with them).

P.S. Eliot- Living in Squalor

So first things first- P.S. Eliot have a new EP on Freedom School Records called Living in Squalor. Second, they did a short but sweet tour about a month ago at this point with Virginia's the Two Funerals. They'll also be hitting the road with Football, Etc. from Houston this summer. I just about peed myself with excitement at the St. Patty's Day show (some evidence here, thanks to Rob's trusty video camera), so definitely make your way to a show in your area.

As for the EP, it's pretty along the lines of Introverted Romances in Our Troubled Mines, which clearly can only be a good thing. Think Lemuria, Tsunami, Discount, and a bit more '90s indie rock. Four new songs plus the a new version of "Broken Record." I was going to say what my favorite new tracks are, but I really can't decide... "Cry Uncle," "Acid Flashbacks," "Dark," "Bear Named Otis,"-- I really don't know. With "Acid Flashbacks," Katie's voice is just so earnest at the end. "Bear Named Otis" has some of the start-stop business that I loved so much in "Sore Subject" off the LP.

I thought "Broken Record" was really a dark horse from the demo, the kind of song that doesn't jump out at you quite as much at first, but after you've been listening for the 25th time or so (I've probably listened to that about 10 times that amount), you realize just how awesome it is. I've had extensive discussions about this, and I think, like for many of my friends, the songs rerecorded from the demo will always remain in their original version in my mind, but I still enjoy hearing the more polished versions. I have to say though, I didn't have to adjust to the abrupt change in recordings, so I've eased into this version, and the EP as a whole pretty much instantly falling in love as I always do with this band.

On Living in Squalor, P.S. Eliot remain solid where they have been in the past, primarily Katie's songwriting (check out King Everything, her solo project, if you haven't already). In addition to that, I think Allison's drumming really comes together on this one, better recorded... tighter and looser simultaneously- not ever forced while remaining pretty seemlessly fluid. Will's guitar too, especially the slight scratchiness on "Bear Named Otis." I think you can really tell that this band has started to come together as their line-up has solidified, yet they haven't become stale. I always have to cut myself on from continuing to ramble about this band because really just listening to their songs will tell you more than I ever could.

I had been thinking about posting some Neo Boys over the summer, but, as with so many things, I hadn't gotten to ripping it at the station. Luckily Mary Jane (P.S. check out her new band, Neonates) sent me some goodies. I did a quick search to see if anyone had posted these before, pretty much only to find results that Grass Widow had been touting the band as an influence. Well, if you want to listen to them for that reason, then here they are. If for other reasons, here they are still.

Here's a little bit of history: "The Neo-Boys, who came from the ashes of Portland’s first all-girl punk band (Formica and the Bitches) had two proper records in their day: A self-titled 7” on Greg Sage’s Trap Records in 1981, and the Crumbling Myths LP on Joe Records in 1982. They also had a couple of songs on the classic early PDX punk comp 10/29/79, a live LP that also included the Wipers, and Sado-Nation." (by Golnar at Maximum Rock n’ Roll)

I first got hooked on their 7" after finding it among our endless number of 7"s over at the Record Hospital, but lately it's been all "Poor Man's Jungle" for me. A couple weeks ago I traded some books with Chuck who puts together the Messthetics comps. He's working on a new girl-band comp and was talking about the idea of uniquely women's music versus just working from the tradition of pre-established male tropes. Anyway, I think Neo Boys along with others like the Raincoats really exemplify this approach within sort of post-punk/art-punk realms.

Now that I'm home doing nothing for nearly three weeks, I'd figured catching up on things I've been meaning to post since the summer... well either do this or read a book about Reagan-- tough call.

Most of my listening to Vancouver-based White Lung's second 7", Magazines, came at the end of my summer, when I was basically listening to half Dangerhouse/Dangerhouse rip-off stuff (the other half being Lookout! things). After their first release on the smaller Hockey Dad Records, they moved over to Deranged for this one.

I don't know if they have a publicist or it's just 'cause they have the novelty of being four (good-looking) girls in a punk band or 'cause they're awesome, but when I was looking some stuff up, I noticed that White Lung have gotten a lot of press from some unlikely sources (various locals, Vice). This doesn't do much good because they give you token comparisons like the Ramones, but it did pay off when I read that guitarist Natasha described them an "an eight-legged ball of fury."

The A-side is the real hit here; for starters, punk songs about ketamine? Still, with each song on here, Mish's vocals provide a bite. Put that over Dangerhouse style and occasional haunting post-punk moments (as on "Backhouse"), and I'm sold.

As for what's up next, I've read that they've recorded (or are recording a new 7"), and when I emailed the band about posting this a few months back, they said they'd tour the East Coast once they're LP is out-- fingers crossed on all accounts. They've got a West Coast tour slated for February for all y'all on this coast.

So I've been just terrible at keeping this up lately- I didn't even post the last two PRDCT playlists. Well, my excuse is that school sucks. I'm writing a thesis, so until March 1, this blog probably won't see too much action. Maybe winter break will see an update.

Well, there's a little bit of good news to go along with this...

The last Cheeky show was awesome. Obviously, I'm sad to see them go, but I'm really excited to get the 12" in the mail (order one from Freedom School!), and I picked up a tape of a live recording of theirs which is cool.

I'll be doing a show with Christa next semester, which will rule. I haven't done a show with anyone for almost two years at this point, and Christa has gotten to hear me rant nearly every day for the past couple months about how excited I am that we're teaming up.

And in the more immediate future, I'm putting together a Slumberland orgy this week to help celebrate its incredible twenty years of indie pop.

I just put up Thursday's Halloween show over here, so get yr cover on. I didn't quite get to play everything I wanted to (nothing off of Fortune Cookie Prize, for instance!), but it was a lot of fun!

Here's another gem of lo-fi punk. Kitty Cat Spy Club were a band in the early to mid 1990s out of the Bay Area. They remind me of some of the more down-tempo Frumpies stuff. In 1995 they put out the Decoy X split with the Teenagers on Radio Trash. I think the real tricky part is that the Teenagers were actually just an alias of KCSC with them mixing up what everyone played.

Kitty Cat Spy Club were a relatively short-lived band, but while they were around they played with the likes of Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, and the Donnas before they were the Donnas.

My favorite Centless Productions release would almost for sure have to be Archie and the Pukes' 7". STRAIGHT EDGE PEOPLE SUCK- happy edge day kiddos. Centless was a Cincinnati-based label, which I can only assume expired at some point in the '90s.

A close second would be the Vendabait's Crushing My World 7". I can find virtually no information on this band, but what drew me to this record in the RH library was a sticker that described it as punk by two boys and two girls (it doesn't take much more than this to sell me but it also said it was good and was written by the trusty squid). This came out in 1992; I can only assume they're also from Ohio, but as I said, I can find virtually no information on this band, and I'm too lazy to go back to the station and look at the liner notes right now (hence the tiny internet picture). If you need more convincing, there's an Avengers cover ("We Are the One")!

This is out of print, of course.

For now, I'm psyched for a couple shows. Scot put the first one together, and Christa took care of the venue. Both shows are all ages/no booze. The first is an $8 suggested donation, the second a $5 suggested donation. So I was just not that into my show last night, and I'm lazy and don't feel like upping my whole playlist. Instead I'll leave you with an album that you'll probably care more about anyway.

I posted some Margaret Thrasher a little while back, and since then they released an LP (and also broke up). I don't think Moderate Rock grabs me quite as much as the 7"s, but that may be hard to do. They still give you a dose of straight-up hardcore with throaty lady vocals, this time even scratchier I think. Jules gets it going from the very beginning with "fuuuuuck, not again." "Raise the Bar" was one of my favorite longs from the 7"s and is rerecorded here. It's played faster but somehow doesn't have the same bounce to it. Putting this all together, it doesn't sound like I really like this LP that much, but I do. I really do. A lot.

This was released on P-Trash but is already out of print, so try to hunt it down through some other distros.

Supposedly some of the people from this band have something new going on, but I can't remember the name of it. I'll try to remember to ask Foreign Objects tonight (listen to them at 10 on Christa's show!).

I keep thinking I've heard my favorite demo of the year. First it was Foreign Objects. Then it was Bloody Gears. Then it was the Waifs. This time, I think Fleabag have done it.

I guess this band's biggest claim to fame is that they're ex-Punkin Pie. I must confess that I've never been super fond of this band. They're super cute, of course, but if I'm gonna go with Plan-It-X-y pop punk, I think I'd choose another.

Fleabag, on the other hand, are beyond awesome. I first heard them on the Best of the Nest 2009 compilation put out by the New York-based feminist zine distro For the Birds (this is an awesome tape/CD by the way, so track it down!). My first time listening through this comp, I loved the Fleabag track the most. On the way down to Best Friends Day, Josh brought their tape along for the drive, and I fell further in love. One thing that I think is really cool is that they put the five songs on both sides of the cassette. They're one of a bunch of awesome pop bands from the Bay Area right now (maybe stretching it on the Bay a bit, but who's excited for the Sourpatch LP?!) They did an East Coast tour this summer, but hit Worcester rather than Boston. Hopefully they'll come back again!

"Curb Appeal" is their track on the Best of the Nest, and I think it remains my favorite on the demo (at least for now since I'm most familiar with it). Like the rest of the tape, it's pretty straight-up pop punk with some '90s indie rock mixed in. I always love songs that reminisce about being a certain age- this really gets me with "we were all 19, you'll forget me by the end of the week." Even just getting a chance to listen to more of the tracks now, they all get a big thumbs up from me. This tape rules- perfect for walking by the river in the sun, or in a few weeks, lamenting the sun that is no longer around.

I thought this flier was cool, and I don't have the tape yet, so I can't scan in that art.

I can't believe it's the end of summer. Like officially now. September 22nd is the fall equinox. I think I went through some intense listening phases this summer. It was primarily Lookout!-Dangerhouse Summer 2K9, but especially at the beginning of the summer it was Slampt-fest. OK not so much Slampt, but a lot of stuff that sounds like it could be on Slampt. Basically just snotty grrrls playing fuzzy pop kinda stuff. Basically when I was ripping a bunch of vinyl there was one awesome bin with things like Bette Davis and the Balconettes and Budget Girls.

Bitch School is a band I don't know too much about, and I can't find any info about them. This self-titled 7" came out in 1999 I believe on Lipstick Records. Straight-up power pop with a bit of fuzz. Crush songs about record shops? The best!

Here's another remnant from the summer. While I'm excited to get back to my regular show, having guest DJs always mixed things up and introduced me to some new records. When Steve came in to spin some stuff, he brought in Anti Scrunti Faction.

It's not too hard to track down this band since Leslie Mah from Tribe 8 was in it. A.S.F. were total bad ass feminists in their own right though, appearing in cool queer zines like J.D.s and writing songs like "Slave to My Estrogen." Plus they were totally crusty looking kids who wrote songs about what made them angry. Or sometimes depressed or happy. Check out this old MRR profile for some more info along with this Flipside interview. Plus in that Flipside interview Leslie says, "I like colors and being positive." And I think they're way snottier than Tribe 8. Seriously, what's not to love? Their LP, Damsels in Distress, is long out of print, so do yourself a favor and grab it below.

Summer is finally coming to a close (today was my first day of classes), so I figure it's time for a bit of reflection on one of my favorite things I picked up this summer.

I was lucky enough to see the Diamond Sea play three dates on their northeast-ish tour. Hopefully if you live above the Mason-Dixon line you got a chance to see them as well. Despite the fact that I saw them three times in four days, each show was awesome. Their tour kick-off was the dyke march benefit show on Friday, June 26 in New York. The Carnal Knowledge reunion was insane. Missed them the next night at Dan's house, but I heard it was fun, and the boys seemed to still be recovering as we drove out to Western Mass the next day. Meghan put together an awesome show. We missed Brain Killer but caught Waste Management, the Diamond Sea, Cult Ritual, Ampere, and Aerosols. The following night just required a short bike ride over to Gay Gardens to see Afflictions, Confines, and then the Diamond Sea and Cult Ritual again. Confines were my favorite of the evening. Their demo is all gone now, but you can (and should) download it here. While you're there, check out the Bloody Gears demo too because it rules.

OK, back to the task at hand. My favorite description of this band is "The Diamond Sea sounds like Sleater-Kinney through a Gang Of Four filter." Aside from the gimicky name drops and what not that make it so great, it's also probably the most accurate one.

This 10" was put out by Yellow Ghost. Tara has also set up a bunch of awesome tours in Australia for bands like Ampere & Daniel Striped Tiger, and Punch will be headed over there soon.

When I first grabbed this record I listened to the A-side over and over. "Heavy Skies" is probably my favorite of the album. While the first half is great, I think my focus on it meant I didn't listen to the B-side enough. "Safe Keeping" is certainly another favorite. Anyway, I'm kind of spent on writing about music for the day and I started this over a month ago, so I don't really remember where I wanted to go with this. I'll just let the Diamond Sea's music speak for itself.

A couple months back now (I guess, my concept of time has gone out the window, and I can't believe I'm moving again in two days), I got a triple dose of records from Life's a Rape: the Cult Ritual Holidays 7", the new Loser Life LP, and the OK? 7". The Cult Ritual 7"? A dud. The Loser Life LP? Solid as usual. The OK? 7"? The best of the bunch-- an awesome catchy surprise of catchy anarcho-punk.

I don't really know a whole lot about OK?. They're from San Diego. I believe the singer has a love connection to Crime Desire/the guy who runs this label (scene gossip oooh). This is their first release. They haven't played too many shows so far. Mostly I know you should check out this record.

I should have access to a scanner again in a week or so, but for now, my awesome photo booth pictures will live on.

According to the liner notes, the A-side, "Earthseed," "is a passive call to arms, an observational description of the modern age and a speculation of that following; it is a record of a species living in denial or arrogance-- but not for long." The flip side "Duress," "is about marketing and about being force-fed nonsense. It describes the feeling of living in a culture that constantly bombards you with advertising, and the agenda these ads perpetuate."

To quote a certain message board poster, "Punk needs more bands like this."

Awesome show tonight with Dan & Melissa. Melissa packed in the riot grrrls while Dan brought the punx and tolerated our little dance party to Skinned Teen. Dan started things off with his brother's old band. I had time to pack in a couple Foreign Objects songs, and we got to hear Melissa's first band, And I Can't Wait, too. No-Wave Double Post: Bound & Gagged and Nervous Gender + PRDCT #11 revisited

I don't really often hype other blogs, but recently, I can't get enough of Kamikaze Tailspin.

I got a request/realized I had never upped the whole show with Screaming Females (back from April) so here it is: Screaming Females guest DJ/interview on the Record Hospital. In case you need a refresher, here's the playlist from PRDCT #11. I'm listening to it over again, and it's surprisingly competent considering I had just broken my edge & Steve gave me a 40 at the show. I'm also getting more used to listening to myself speak.

There's a bunch of things to look forward... I think right now I'm most excited to see Dead Uncles & Dylan Bredeau next Tuesday with Foreign Objects and the Waifs (aka Waifffs, new Boston band with members of Libyans, General Interest, Closet Fairies, blah blah blah).

Other than that, I'll be heading down to New York in a few weeks for a visit. I'll definitely be checking out the Big She-Bang IV on Saturday, August 15, put on by For the Birds this year. In addition to a bunch of awesome workshops, Little Lungs, Zombie Dogs, Ina! Ina! (whom I missed at the Dyke March benefit/Carnal Knowledge reunion show), Kate Ferencz, Inertia, & Full of Fancy will be playing.

The weekend after, I'll be heading down to Richmond for Best Friends Day with a car full of punks. I'm excited (I'd even venture to say beyond excited) to see Pink Razors and hang out with some BFFs.

I don't listen to a whole lot of no-wave, but since Chris played some Bound & Gagged on my show a few weeks ago, I've been listening to that & Nervous Gender pretty consistently. I often kind of view this kind of stuff as a novelty, but I've been enjoying these.

I'm not going to pretend I know a vast history of either of these bands. Instead, I'll give you a little bit and direct you to other places that are more comprehensive.

Bound & Gagged were an all-girl no-wave band from Boston. There's a myspace for them here that has a little bit more info.

Nervous Gender took its name because of Phranc's androgyny. I mostly know Phranc because of the Team Dresch song "Uncle Phranc." I might be a bit of a n00b, but I'll use the fact that I was negative ten years old when this band formed as an excuse. There's a pretty good wiki page for them, and you can check out the band's website for some cool fliers & things.

I'm upping the Bound & Gagged 12" and Nervous Gender's side of their split LP with Beelzebub Youth called Music from Hell.

Thursday night was pretty insane. Check out some of Rob's footage. And speaking (er writing I guess) of Rob, he'll be guest dj'ing along with Andy this week. Dan will be in the week after that.

In high school X was one of my favorite bands. I think I was in ninth grade when my sister's friend Ari first played Los Angeles for us, and since then I have never stopped loving them. Basically if you're a girl growing up in Southern California and you like punk, it's impossible not to be into this band. Read Lee's super-long rant about this over at cookie cutter.

Anyway, X were my first introduction into the Dangerhouse catalog and remain my favorite. Lately though I've been listening to a lot of the Bags. I like to think of the Bags as the snot to X's sass. And you know how much Christa and I love snotty girls... actually I may not have given that rant on this blog, but basically snotty girls are the best.

All Bagged Up is pretty much what it sounds like- it's all of the band's recordings between 1977 & 1980... the Dangerhouse recordings and then a bunch of live stuff, rehearsals, demos, and alternate takes.

Things are really awkward between the two of them now because they got in a big fight and are no longer going to be living together. The Weakerthans

Today has been throwback day... kicked it off with In the Aeroplane over the Sea, did a double dose of Pinkerton, then moved on to a John K. Samson session, Weakerthans followed by Propagandhi. Middle/high school jam session are totally necessary sometimes.

I feel like this might get taken down reasonably quickly since it's a bigger band, but whatever. I don't think Fallow was one of the Weakerthans' most popular albums or anything, but it was the only one I had at the time (because it was the only one my older sister had, and I burned it from her). My most distinct memory of this band is discussing them on the bus to some softball tournament in ninth grade. My friend like Guster, I liked pop punk, this is where we found an overlap. Wow, that sentence is kind of embarrassing. She was a sophomore; at least I was only fourteen.

Hung out with Screaming Females last night for their big show at House of Blues with the Dead Weather. It was totally crazy to see them play in such a big place- capacity is supposedly 2400. Anyway, it was sweet, and they get free beer, so now I'm stocked up. The girl in Discount sings for the Dead Weather, and she's a total fucking rock star/diva (not in a good way). That was whack. I wish I could see the Screamales/Shell Shag West Coast tour. Over in Cambridge though getting psyched for Punch/Ampere/Trifle Tower/Dark Forces/L'Antietam on Thursday night and then most likely Harvey Milk on Saturday night. In the future, I will almost for sure be headed down to Richmond for Best Friends Day.

Back to the task at hand... As promised another PVI release. I started to write this at various points over the past month or so, so it's probably kind of all over the place.

Shitty picture of the album art... had another one but my camera broke/didn't back up my old hard drive recently at all. If you want to buy me a new one, get in touch. That would be cool.

Pens play sorta noisy pop... maybe if Skinned Teen (ok maybe I'm just saying this cause they're both English) were really hip 15 years later, slowed down a little bit, and became fuzzier and unintelligible. They might be the hippest of the bunch... doing a big West Coast tour with Graffiti Island and Crocodiles, capping it off with a San Diego show with Wavves & No Age. They're playing at Spaceland in LA, which Matt & I used to think was so cool in high school. It was 21+, and we would always say we were gonna go there for our 21st birthdays. Instead some of us have sisters & friends who hire cross-dressing singing telegrams to sing Beyonce and "Happy Birthday." Anyway, Pens definitely give my favorite side of the split.

This weekend was awesome. I found out on Friday night that Brainless Oneders couldn't play, which obviously was not ideal, but not really that big of a deal. We started really late (and I normally try to run relatively timely punk shows), but oh well, I knew that was going to happen. My camera won't turn on now (probably because of the shit show that ensued- see below, by Jacki), so I don't really have any pictures. Hopefully I will be able to recover them eventually though.

The show itself was awesome. It was great to finally get to see PS Eliot play, and I was so psyched that Little Lungs could play too. Everything went really smoothly- a couple nice boys brought vegan cupcakes, a couple other attendees even drove down from Toronto for the show. Thanks all around to those who came, played, helped out with the show, etc.

What followed was definitely one of the most fun nights I've had this summer complete with markers (again see above), quiet dance parties, climbing into windows, and a couple drinks. (hey PSE- I don't think you read this blog, but up the northerners, we totally kicked your asses.)

Since then I've been consistently jamming their LP (put out on the always awesome Salinas Records, who will also be putting out a Hop Along 10" very soon). They've sold out of it already on tour, but you can get it from the label eventually. I've also been getting a heavy dose of the King Everything demo (Katie's solo stuff). I also am currently wearing my brand new PS Eliot shirt, featuring an awesome drawing by Allison.

I also drove down to see them last night in New Haven- Brian put together an awesome show, and it was great to see Dead Uncles again. It was a ton of fun, good to hang out with everyone again, but now I'm exhausted and am going to sleep.

I ordered the Hand Jobs/Talbot Tagora cassette last winter, and it is perpetually in my tape player. I honestly could not tell you what the Talbot Tagora side is like though (other than based on other stuff of theirs I've heard) because all I listen to is the Hand Jobs side of this tape. I've done hour long drives just pressing rewind each time the four short songs pass.

Lots of attitude, shitty recording... I couldn't ask for much more. They also have a couple live tracks on the Gimme Cooties comp, which is an awesome idea, but the whole recording is pretty terrible (too bad since there's a lot of really great bands on it).

This came out some time last year on what seems like an uber hip London label Paradise Vendors, Inc. that sells out of shit pretty quickly. I'll also post the Pens/Male Bonding split some time soon. This tape and that split are sold out. It sucks to pay shipping from the UK anyway. A couple other upcoming posts were gonna be things I ripped at the station, but then I realized Pukekos had already scooped me on that, so check out the Budget Girls and Bette Davis and the Balconettes over there.

Not really sure what is going on with this band now, but they played a show with General Interest in NYC a few days ago.

Seriously download this tape though because it fucking rules and it's out of print. And, yo Hand Jobs, come play in Boston.

This was a request, but also, I think this is a pretty awesome release, so I'm more than happy to oblige.

Reports is a band I don't know a whole lot about. They're from Cambridge, but I've never seen them live. They don't play that many shows around here, and somehow I always manage to miss them. There's an alright garage-y scene around here, but not the sort of hipster garage stuff you find a lot of other places. I do know that Reports keep it real, playing things more on the poppy side of that genre.

I was really impressed with their 7", which came out on awesome local label Ride the Snake. No real frills, just good times. B-side is fuzzier, but A-side is my pick.

Look for the General Interest 12" coming up on Ride the Snake too!

Cheeky's Art of the Underground 7"

I love the idea of singles series- getting a 7" in the mail once a month = lots of fun. In reality, however, most of the time you subscribe to the series to get a couple 7"s that you actually want and then you get 10 pieces of shit in disc form. The gems you get may make it worth whatever amount you paid up front. Cheeky's Art of the Underground single is such a record.

I think I've already expressed my love for this band in every which way, and trust me, I could go on. The A side of this 7" ("Deal with It") gives you more of the 'tude from the Choke on a Cheeseburger EP. Straight-up pop punk that makes me wanna bask in the sun we had today (I wrote this a week ago- it's been raining recently... wtf happened to summer?). Messier recording than the other 7" that only adds to the charm.

"The Golden Ghost" on the flip side is a pleasant surprise. Rather than your usual pop punk jam, it's a Slingshot Dakota cover. I might leave this one to Brian, who said, "Cheeky AOTU b-side makes me want to stop writing music," and, upon discovering that the song was a cover, "i feel a little better about my own abilities now that i know it took 2 bands to create that perfection."

It's my 21st birthday today, so I'm giving you a real party jam to celebrate. I've been listening to Dynasty's self-titled album on repeat for a week or two straight while cleaning up the shit hole that is the RH lounge.

I don't really know a hole lot about this band or this release other than that it came out in 2003 on Tigerbeat6 and contains the drummer from Numbers. And that it's fucking catchy. You can find a little bit at last.fm.

Dynasty play really sweet dancey electropop with songs about stalkerdom and lust for people in uniforms, among others. Anyway, jam this hard for summer.

Record Hospital Fest was awesome. I could feel the Body through the floor. L'Antietam's lamps ruled all. Friday night favorites were Cheeky & Little Lungs (of course) and Dead Uncles. Pop punk is the best. Black Clouds, Thick Shakes, & DST too... Really just too many good times to write it all down. Plus I should do school right now instead. Here are some of my favorite pictures. More here (just mine, mostly from Friday night because my camera was low on batteries). There's also some from Future Breed and the Phoenix. I think there's gonna be a write-up in the Phoenix this week too which is cool. And the Herald said this last week:

Drinking Woman

I'm a big Tara Jane O'Neil fan (quick plug, she's got a new album & a tour in May) and am always impressed by the variation in the types of bands she's played in & how long she's been making music for. I think though, in terms of variation, while Rodan were definitely harder than her solo stuff, the Sonora Pine, & Retsin, it's fairly easy to see the bridge between them, especially with the longer instrumental Rodan stuff. I can't really play favorites with all of these bands, but for me, the one that stands apart in terms of sound from the rest of them is Drinking Woman.

Drinking Woman were TJO's second band I think, though I may have the timing a little bit jumbled. To my knowledge, they only put out a self-titled 7", released on Three Little Girls, and contributed to the Go in the Dark comp (along with Slant 6, Rastro!, & the Scissor Girls), released on Christina Billotte's Mira Records, (both of which are posted below), though they might have a demo or something too. Drinking Woman were Heather Cantrell singing, Erica Bricking on guitar, Greta Ritcher on drums, & TJO on bass (though she's just credited as "Tara O'Neil" on Go in the Dark for some reason).

Whereas Retsin & the Sonora Pine give you sort of slowcore pop tunes, Drinking Woman are pretty much straight up indie rock done right. Their song on Go in the Dark is a slightly more lo-fi recording. The vocal backings throughout a lot of the song give it a slightly more pop feel but then you occasionally have someone slightly gruffer in the background switching things up.

The Machines, 1990-1993

Coming this May I'll be doing a Simple Machines orgy on the Record Hospital.

This is Jenny & Kristin taken from the Simple Machines site.

Simple Machines was a DC area (Arlington, Virginia to be exact) label run by Kristin Thomson & Jenny Toomey from 1990-1998. Its first releases centered around the very basic concept of the simple machine: wedge, wheel, pulley, screw, lever, & inclined plane. The first, Wedge, was released in April 1990, featuring Geek (one of Jenny's bands), the Hated, Lungfish, & Edsel. From there, the series expanded. Wheel came out in September of the same year with a press twice as large. Holy Rollers & the Juliana Experience contributed to that one. Pulley came out in June '91 with Bricks (a pre-Superchunk, pre-Tsunami project), My New Boyfriend, the Nation of Ulysses, & Mommyheads. Screw ensued the following month with Geek (the band's last hurrah), Velocity Girl, Jawbox, & Candy Machine. It was again a slightly larger press with 2500 total up from 2000 of the previous two. Lever followed in January 1992 with Autoclave, Severin, Circus Lupus, & Scrawl. Inclined Plane finished off the Machines series in January 1993 after Simple Machine's 1992 was occupied largely by the Fortune Cooke Prize comp, the Neapolitan Metropolitan box set, & Tsunami's Deep End. 4500 of this one were pressed with songs by Tsunami, Superchunk, Rodan, & Unrest. All of these 7"s were eventually compiled onto one CD, which is what I'm posting.

While putting out this six 7" series, Simple Machines managed to stay true to its goal of supporting their "peers' efforts by working with other small labels, bands, and local businesses to sustain a productive, self sufficient punk/la la network." You can check out some more of their mission statement of sorts along with lots of other goodies (like a comprehensive discography) at their website.

The series obviously features some big names of 1990s indie rock (Superchunk, Nation of Ulysses for example) and some personal favorites of mine (Tsunami, Rodan). I like that Jenny & Kristin always thought about projects thoroughly, piecing them together in creative, cool ways (like the Working Holiday series). I'm really stoked to do a Simple Machines orgy and am excited to get to interview the two women who ran such an awesome label.

So this is still in print, and you can definitely find it on other blogs, but I have been listening to Cro Magnon's "Groundline" & Buckets of Bile's "Caught It Still" on repeat recently.

XXperiments is an all-girl comp put out this past fall by Ohio-based label Die Stasi. I didn't get at first that the XX is an obvious references to the whole chromosome thing, thinking that it was just sort of a hip/weird spelling of experiments. Sometimes I don't give things like this a proper chance. We got the Zola Jesus 7" at the station (she's doing a big tour this summer btw), and I waited a while to listen to it. When I finally did, I loved it, but I still didn't listen to this comp when Christa brought it in a little while later. I tend to think I don't like this sort of weird not-quite-noise variety of hipness, but I'm glad I finally gave this comp a chance.

It was originally supposed to come with a pretty awesome zine Christa tells me (she heard from U.S. Girls). They all wrote pretend bios for each other, but the guy who runs the label said it was too girly (which seems weird since that's kind the whole point of the comp). Well, we all know I am into girly shit. Anyway, there's hardly any album art to go along with it as a result- weak.

As I mentioned before, the highlights for me are by far Cro Magnon & Buckets of Bile. Cro Magnon are from Lafayette, Indiana, and you can check its two members' solo work on XXperiments. Haley Fohr plays solo as Circuit des Yeux and Kate Leming as Bird. Buckets of Bile is just one girl from New York.

I've been listening to some of the MAXIMUMROCKNROLL radio podcast things the last couple days. They have a couple pretty awesome lady punk specials up here. The more recent one has a bunch of post-punky, dancey things that I don't really listen to that much on my own (though I probably should), but whenever I do, I really love it. They played one track that was reissued on the Grlz comp, which we got in at the station last fall (came out in '05 though I think). The subtitle of Grlz is appropriately "Women Ahead of Their Time."

Though Grlz jumps around a little bit in space & time, ranging from the English Slits in 1979 to Brussels immigrant Anna Domino in 1988. The album still remains cohesive sonically though with feet-tapping high hats typical of art punk. You get synth-driven songs like "Softness" by Dorothy, more reggae/dub ones like "Fade Away" by New Age Steppers, or my ultimate dance song from that era, Delta 5's "Mind Your Own Business." (The beginning of the Wanna Buy a Bridge comp with "Alternative Ulster" and that are my favorite beginning to a dance party.) Grlz gives you the expected with the Slits and Bow Wow Wow for example, but also uncovers a few you might not already know.

While Grlz of course can't compare to something like Wanna Buy a Bridge or Cut in terms of importance in a scene, it provides a pretty good historical retrospective. I'm not going to delve into all of that, but there's a thorough history up here.

On an entirely unrelated note, Turboslut will be playing in Boston on March 7. It'll also be Red Thread's last Boston show. I'll post more details when I know. They're a totally awesome new post-punky band with Terry from the Conversions on vox, Meghan from Ampere on bass, Melissa from Red Thread on guitar, and Dan from Libyans on drums. I saw them play with Get Laid, General Interest, & Acid Reflux this past Friday, and it was awesome. They have a demo tape, which is now on the Record Hospital playlist.

I'll be doing Parker's show tonight from 3:30-5 am, so tune in: all pop, pop punk, grrrls, etc. after seeing Acid Reflux, General Interest, Get Laid, & Foreign Objects (first Boston show!).

Sinks seem to be kind of your typical drunk, Midwestern punks playing fuzzy garage-y punk, but they're more than that. I think Terminal Boredom can say it much better than I:

"It's not too often these days that the words 'lo-fi, 'garage-punk, and 'kick ass' come together in the perfect harmony that Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder nauseatingly sang about in their 1982 number one hit, but I'm happy to say that on this record they combine as smoothly as a swig from a rum bottle mixed in-mouth with a sip of Coke. What sets the Sinks apart from the pack are great songs and the fact that they kick ass. That later point is key. Whenever I listen to this record, I'm taken with just how much these songs rock. No exploration of sonic vistas, nary a trace of hip weirdness, and a pronounced lack of innovation - and so much the better for it. We've all heard fast, loose, cheap, dirty punk rock before, but like pizza and sex, when it's great it's still awesome every time."

They're talking about Sinks' first 7" that came out on Fashionable Idiots in October 2007. It was recorded live on a two-track to add just the quality necessary for these kinds of things. The first press sold out really quickly from the label, but it seems like they still have some of the second. They put out another 7" on the same label this past summer, but it's gone for now.

If you haven't checked out Fashionable Idiots at all, it's worth your time. Lots more fuzzy Midwestern punks, a touch of power pop, and some hardcore too.

I don't know if the hype has really extended outside of Boston that much, but Social Circkle were kind of the shit here. I say "were" not because they're totally broken up, but they barely ever play shows anymore because one of them moved to New York. They've got a couple shows coming up though: today and on Valentine's Day (maybe a little bit of a change of pace from my Magnetic Fields date last year). I'd don't think I'm going to be able to go tonight, which really sucks, because Brain Handle, Wasted Management, & Dry Hump are also playing. So go in my place please.

I could give you the standard "'77 +'81 blah blah blah" description, but I'll let you just listen to them if you haven't already. Also, I have to leave now.

It was great mostly. I took the bus down to New York with Mary & Adrienne on Friday afternoon. Once we arrived rocking out to '90s & middle school hitz at some random restaurant around 15th Street ensued. Eventually I met up with Lee & Adam at Don Pedro's in Brooklyn to see Cheeky & Screaming Females. My first time seeing both bands- awesome. I also finally got to meet Jarrett & Angie, who were both super nice.

For some reason Cheeky played first, and they were great. Stupid Party were next & were fun as well. Emergency Party didn't seem like they were gonna be all that interesting, so Adam & I stepped out for a little while (and Lee confirmed the boring factor). Screaming Females went on next, and the set was crazy fun. I had read a lot of places that Marissa can crazy shred, and live, it was confirmed true. If you haven't ever listened to them, her voice is really awesome, but I can't really compare it to anyone else's. I think my favorite description of them is from Marissa: "Queer disco on the moon, with pterodactyls and squid fighting satellite dishes." Anyway, everyone was dancing a ton and having a great time. I'm really excited that they're going to come up here on tour soon- stay tuned for more details.

Bone Zone played next. They're from Boston, but I hadn't seen them play before. They really didn't fit in with the bill, and I think the show would have benefited from having four bands instead of six (cutting out them & Emergency Party). Adam described them as "bro/jock noise" and peaced. Most people just went down to the basement or to the bar during the set. At one point some really drunk dude punched the singer in the face. It was really weird... I thought it was maybe some sort of performance art or something, but he was just really sloppy I guess & got kicked out. Anyway, Shellshag played last and were fun too. They covered "Fuck and Run", which is one of my favorite songs ever.

Mostly it was just a totally posi night/space (yeah, I kind of hate the word "posi," but it's accurate in a non-cheesy, non-edge kind of way here). And in a way that I don't think totally exists in Boston (or LA). We have a lot of great shows here, but I've never been to one with this sort of atmosphere. Everyone was really friendly & having a good time. I think it's also the first time I've been to a majority female punk show. I'm not equating this with a positive atmosphere or anything, but it's definitely nice to see girls out on the scene.

1. Don't forget about the Corin Tucker orgy tonight and tomorrow night! I'll get the interview online soon-ish (probably easier if you just listen up at 11:30 tonight). As internet-savvy as google blogger requires you to be, I'm not very good at all that stuff, so I might need another tutorial from Christa.
2. I'm seeing Cheeky & Screaming Females on Friday and am totally stoked. Neither band has come up here, so it'll be my first time seeing both of them. I'm also excited to see lots of New York friends!
3. Lots of things in the works right now, so stay tuned for info about shows & the like.

Now that I'm done with my papers & final, I got to go through all the records I got while I was at home & in the mail recently. I got the new Margaret Thrasher LP, Moderate Rock. I dig it, but not quite as much as their 7"s- Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret Trasher and Does It Matter?. The 7"s are out-of-print through the now-defunct Bistro Distro (the distro's label is Clarence Thomas), but I imagine you can find them through some other distributors. Try Thrillhouse, Grave Mistake, or No Idea.

I can't remember when Margaret Thrasher first caught my attention... they had an interview in the second (?) Give Me Back or maybe it's just their great name (not to be confused with the other band with the same name from England or Russia or something). The Margaret Thrasher I'm talking about are three girls & one guy from Vancouver. Before headed on a European tour, they played their last show on this side of the ocean at the end of August. So no more Margaret Thrasher, unfortunately, and I never got to see them play. That zine is at home, so I can't scan it in or anything, but you can check out another MT interview here.

I love Juls's voice. I think you can't automatically tell she's a girl, and it's real throaty which is cool. Their songs are pretty feminist and angry and sometimes pretty depressing. "Raise the Bar" (which is on the new LP too) deals with childhood sexual abuse, showing the pain, sadness, & anger that goes along with it. I would have liked to see them live because she looks pretty in your face in a bunch of pictures I've seen.

The Poet You Never Were posted these two 7"s a few months back. You should definitely check out that blog- he's got lots of good stuff up there. Anyway, I'm putting their demo from 2005 along with the two 7"s. So check it out, check out their LP, mourn the fact that they're no longer a band.

I had about 60 pages of writing due between Friday and yesterday, which meant a constant soundtrack of Earth, Elder, and 16 with a bit of TJO mixed in.

I don't really know a whole lot about 16, but they have a super long bio up on last.fm. The essentials really are just that they were originally named "Fifteen" because they all had girlfriends who were 15, even though they were in their 20s, but then they found out there already was a band with that name, and one of the girlfriends turned 16, so they renamed the band. They also have a new album, Bridges to Burn, coming out on January 20.

Scott Case compiles a bunch of out-of-print material. It has tracks from their self-titled double 7", the Sailrabbit 7", and the Preoccupied 7". Jeffry told me that the band never actually approved it. The stuff was recorded in 1992 & '93, but the CD (I think it just came out on CD as a comp) came out in '98.

I haven't listened to too much of 16's newer stuff, but it's more metallic/sludgey I think. I just think of Scott Case as more sludgey hardcore. Something about it always reminds me of Songs about Fucking. Probably not something most people would want to work to, but I really like to listen to it when I write.
